a)There are 4 tones in Mandarin :
                                                         tone graph
first tone : high pitch.                                -
second tone : mid- high pitch.                   /
third tone : middle pitch.                           v
last tone : mid- low pitch.                          \

b)A diference in tone indicates a difference in meaning.
    e.g:

  • mā  (媽/妈) mother                    
  • má (麻) hemp                        
  • mǎ  (馬/马) horse
  • mà  (罵) scold
